Recently bought an external HDD case with USB 2.0/FireWire 400/eSATA ports and updated the firmware to fix various FW bugs.
Probably going to use it for backups only but installed OS X on it just to test FW boot - it works but only on my PowerMac.. the PowerBook takes an awful long time to find no external drive connected on the boot screen!
(The FW 400 port is not broken as I did install OS X using the PB)

Q: is this a known PB software bug?
Q: could a FW 400 to FW 800 adapter make it boot?

Useing FW or CD takes also on my Macs a (relative) long time to find and boot.....

I use USB instead of FW! You won't recognice the speed difference really.......

I use a firewire external drive to boot OS X from w/o problems on my Powerbook 5.6. I haven't modified anything at firmware level nor did any other actions. It's a bog standard FW400 harddisk (by iomega) and a bog standard Powerbook and it works OOTB here.
