Pampers your info does not answer my question. Am i wrong or on your SSD is there just the boot.img while all the data is on the SATA Hard Drive (not SSD)? Is so, then your test results are just relative to the SATA one.

Milky I've said SSD+SATA combo so what I meant is that I use Sonnet Sata controller with SSD drive. I have no IDE drives at all.

    Ah ok then!
So the read speed is not so better than the one I got with a normal 2,5" IDE 4500rpm hard drive! The write speed instead is quite better.

    Thanks a lot SoundSquare!!
Now we have real confirmation that the OWC is actually faster than the Kingspec! The only strange data is the seek time that seems better for the Kingspec.

    Miky060,
    Quote:

You're getting a read speed of 61MB/s! A really good result.

Nice, you still don´t get it.

Once you plug in a recent SSD into one of our systems, you hit the hardware limit very hard. Any not total braindead SSDs can read/write more than 400MB/s.. Even the best and fastes SSD cannot read/write faster than the computer it is used in.

So all your test is confirming is the minis IDE speed, when using MorphOS.

If you want to compare some data, then compare the "seek on a device section" with a real harddrive. Thats where the speed comes from.

i have to agree with Geit. The only relevant comparison about SSDs in our systems would be the reliability of the drive in time in my opinion, OWC seems to provide much higher quality SSDs than Kingspec according to various feedbacks from users and chip used.

Just purchase two 1106 Powerbook that someone took a drill to (going through the trackpards and destroying the hard drives).
Seriously lazy way to deal with security issues,

I'd like to get an SSD, but don't want to shell out the $ for something like the OWC products.

I have a friend in USA that can buy for me from OWC site and he will be back in Italy next week... I wanted to buy the Legacy Pro (44pin IDE) but it's not available in this moment! Aargh! Do you think that this other combo can work?

    1,8" SATA -> 2,5" IDE adapter

Looking at demonstrations of SSDs in a G4 Powerbook I'm not impressed.
It would bw cheaper (and almost as fast) to switch to a 7200 rpm drive.

Err? What demonstrations? Most of them are using a fresh installation, which means no HDD fragmentation at all. Cloning an existing old system to an SSD would give proper result, as SSDs do not fragment and have practically no seek times, while harddrives need to search blocks machanically, which takes ages.

Also keep in mind that OSX is a bloated OS, too. It writes to disk all the time. A fast SSD won´t change that. It will just speed up the process.

MorphOS for sure gets hell fast and recent SSDs are putting the internal IDE to its limit, so even a cheap SSD will boost the PB to its limit.

If i need to open my laptop for some reason it will get an SSD. I am using one in my Pegasos2 and it´s awesome.

    Not impressed?

The older and (refering to clocking) 1/3 slower system performs the benchmark more than 1.5 minutes faster just by adding an SSD.

As said in prior post. If they would have swapped the HD an SSD it would give the real information on the speed gain, as CPU load is for sure part of the result. The older powerbook may even have slower memory connection and still being older and lacking 500Mhz it beats by nearly 2 minutes, which is a huge difference.

Here I made a speed test, where my slow Peg2 1Ghz compiles the same ambient sources 5 (!!) minutes faster than my 1.5 Ghz Mac mini. And it is a fact that the mini is around twice as fast as the peg2.

Just remember an SSD just speeds up disk usage and not data processing. So it hardly depends on disk activity how much speed boost you feel. A compiler speeds up it complete task, while games or a browser will just launch faster, as they won´t need to load data constantly.

On MorphOS an SSD will increase boot time (you can get less a second after leaving OF) and speed up launching applications. So if you click something it will be instantly there, which is amazing and make the system feel like you inserted a faster CPU board. The applications itself of course won´t benefit from the SSD and they fully depend on CPU and RAM speed. (Compilers, Database and Search operations excluded)

On OSX on the other side the OS is constantly writing and reading data no matter what you do, but it will also always require much cpu load, so at the end the speed gain is not as big as expected. OSX Applications are much bigger, there is much memory to be carried around between disk and ram. So it will feel faster, but compared to MorphOS it will not result in such a big "wow" effect.

So what about the combo I proposed? Do you think "1,8" OWC Aura Pro SSD
+ 1,8" SATA -> 2,5" IDE adapter" will work? You can see them (links) in my previous post.
