I want to file a complaint about Hooligan's post to the moderator here.

Hooligan is the moderator here? Never mind!

Edit: Forgot to add the smiley to show that I was only joking. And, no, I don't want to be a moderator here. This is the only Amiga related site I know of that doesn't need any moderation 99.9% of the time.

EAB and A1k might also be that way, but I don't read those sites often enough to know if there is almost no trouble on them.

Not sure if this was resolved, but just holding down the Option key during boot until the drive icons come up. Then you can select the CD or any other drive and boot from it.

Tried the same thing with three sticks so far and same result every time, iso burnt to cdr or dvdr simply doesn`t appear in the boot menu or get booted from when I hold `C`.

    I`m completely out of ideas.

    My Powerbook is an 5,7 (A1107) 1.67GHz.

I hate OSX I just want MorphOS to work :-(

Can't believe you're having this much trouble. I've been thinking about getting a Powerbook too. You did try holding the Option key on boot?

I know it is mentioned before but have you disconnected any usb muse and / or device when trying to boot from CD? It seems that any connected usb mouse somehow causes trouble on booting from CD... except if the mouse is an Apple one. I was not able to boot even from an OSX CD on the very same PowerBook -the CD was auto-ejected from drive during boot process- only to discover that everything was fixed when I disconnected my third party USB mouse -I have noticed the very same behavior and o my G5-. Anyway disconnect your third party mouse, hold on the option -alt- key as you power on, you will end on the startup menu, by then insert the CD on drive and its icon should appear.

Ok, finally got my PB today but I can`t install MOS on it because despite burning 5 (yes 5) cds on OSX which is already on it obviously, they never boot when I hold C (PB just ignores them) and they don`t appear in the boot menu either.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Fraggle,

Sorry I have not checked this thread more carefully to see that you are still having problems booting and installing MorphOS3.1 on your G4 PowerBook. I have been busy elsewhere and when I saw the off topic banter in this thread, I guess I assumed that your problems had been resolved.

Scanning through the thread quickly just now I am surprised that no one seems to have suggested that you are probably making a mistake in how you are burning the MorphOS3.1 CD's (maybe someone did and I missed it).

When I was first starting to use Mac's and MorphOS, I too created several "Drink Coasters" out of CD-R discs, because I did not properly "Burn" the CD disc image, but instead burned the files from the MorphOS.iso to the CD-R and only ended up with a data disc, and not a bootable MorphOS3.1 installation disc. Do you think it is possible that this is what you are doing as well? When you say that you do not like MacOSX, this makes me believe that maybe you are not burning the disc image correctly.

You must use the MacOSX "Disk Utility" program to burn the MorphOS.iso disc image to the CD-R and must not change the name that the CD is going to be named by default. One or two members here will probably remember that I made the same mistake. In fact, I think I made this same mistake more than once, because I forgot about my mistake a couple years later, when a new version of MorphOS was released, so I made the same mistake again.

If you are burning only the files in the .iso image to the CD it will cause the exact symptoms you are describing and since you are not having any problems with the SuperDrive in your G4 PowerBook while you are running MacOSX, this leads me to believe that you are creating data discs and not bootable MorphOS3.1 Installation CD's.

Please describe exactly each step you are taking to create your MorphOS3.1 installation CD when you burn it, so we can tell you if you are doing it correctly. If you have not been using the MacOSX "Disk Utility" program, I can almost guarantee you that this is where you are going wrong.

    Hope this helps.

Personally I use "Burn" with OS X.

Burning an ISO image involves dragging the ISO image over the window and hitting the "Burn" button. Much less error prone than using Disk Utility...

    @Piru,

I will download and try "Burn" out on the next image I need burned to disc.

I don't know why MacOSX is so unintuitive when it comes to burning .iso images to disc. The operating system should know that anyone wanting to burn a file with the extension of .iso to a CD or DVD, does NOT want to create a data disc with the files contained within that .iso image.

The default operation of MacOSX when burning any .iso image to a disk should always be to burn the image to disc, not default to burning the files within the .iso image to the disc.

Generally, I really like MacOSX. I like it far more than any version of Windows I have ever used (though I do not own Windows7 yet), but I have to say that there are several quirks about how MacOSX works that are just as unintuitive as my example above. For an operating system that is supposed to be so "Different Thinking" than Windows and so user friendly, MacOSX still falls short in many areas.

The people who hate all things Apple will most likely chime in to say how terrible MacOSX is and what a creep they think Steve Jobs was, but for the 10+ years or so that I have been using Mac computers, or Mac emulation, it has always been far better than the other two mainstream operating systems intended for home users.

By comparison, AmigaOS1.2 to 3.9, seem so much easier and more intuitive than anything Apple, Microsoft, or Linux Torvalds has invented. Maybe it had something to do with my attitude and learning capability when I first started using the Amiga (which was my first ever computer at home and almost my first computer experience anywhere).

Ok, a bit of progress :o)

Now it gets as far as:

    `DO-QUIESCE finished`

then hangs and I have to reset the PMU to make the PB turn on again at all...

I will try the burn app to make a cdr now...

Linus is "just" the inventor and maintainer of the Linux *kernel*. Things running on top of that have been invented by others. Comparing whole operating systems to pure OS kernels is not fair, as is blaming an individual for things like unintuitive UI logic when he has nothing to do with that. In fact, with Linux-based operating systems the matter of UI solely depends on the specific distribution, as has been impressively illustrated by Android, Chrome OS, WebOS, Tizen, Bada and in Amiga context by Amithlon in the past and AEROS just recently.
