The Cortex-A8 is, as you might have guessed, the predecessor to the Cortex-A9:

The Cortex-A8 based chip that is used by Genesi is Freescale's
i.MX515 and they're about to switch to the
i.MX535 which is still Cortex-A8. As for Cortex-A9 they made statements pointing to the
i.MX6 for future Genesi products:

Yes, there are. However, they're usually not Cortex-A9 yet but Cortex-A8 at best, most often just
ARM11 and sometimes even only
ARM9.
