    hi guys,

    just have a look at this.

    Allocated memory at 0x229B8840 -> 0x3BA9C7BF, 420364160 bytes
    Writing 0x00000000... 250 MB/sec.
    Verifying 0x00000000... 161 MB/sec.
    Writing 0xFFFFFFFF... 252 MB/sec.
    Verifying 0xFFFFFFFF... 160 MB/sec.
    Memory is ok!

    pretty slow, dont you think? i have a peg2 with G4 @ 1GHz and 266MHz DDR Ram. whats wrong? i saw results in other threads which were about 400MB/s...

    i have tested my memory, and it does those 400/210 megs/s, so i guess it's a bad memory module... perhaps some old ones...

    what version of openfirmare are you using? IIRC there were some version with slow memory performance.. but i might remember completley wrong.. it's been years since i read about it.

    This is how i remember it anyway.. some user had problems with his ODW machine, his clock was running too fast.. and with another firmware the memoryperformance was poor.. i'll try and search for this post to see how wrong i am

    So what should I say? On my peg II G3 I have 85/144MB/s. Is this
    normal for G3 Pegasos or rather I have some problem with hardware?

    well, my pegasos1/g3 does strange 72/179 megs/s. i guess it's a problem with memory, as it's a 512 megs dimm, although system sees only 256 megs...

    bye, MarK.

    If you want an approximation of the memory performance then make sure you use DISABLE option of memtest, else multitasking will 'change' the results.

    regards,
    tokai

    (happy with very old OFW and 481M/230M/s ;)

    i dont have the most recent version of OF, thats for sure. i tried it with the disable option and the results are as you can see, very poor.

    Allocated memory at 0x236DE600 -> 0x3B7A19FF, 403452928 bytes
    Writing and Verifying 0x00000000... Write 261 MB/sec. Verify 168 MB/sec.
    Writing and Verifying 0xFFFFFFFF... Write 263 MB/sec. Verify 168 MB/sec.
    Memory is ok!

    I have memory running at max. 266MHz, just like the bus of the peg2. i didn't see the necessary to buy faster ram, cause i thought that it wouldn't effect the ram speed. maybe i should try one of those PC400 simms.

    My Peg 2 G3/600 reaches 100/161 .

    I wonder if this is normal for G3 ? Anyone out there having much higher values ?

    the most recent version is the one from december 16th, 2005. It all runs just fine with full ram speed. OS X is working quite well and it is really enjoyable. that update isnt official, i wrote a mail to bPlan today and got my flash update half an hour later. good support :) thanks again!

    so what's the perfomance now?

    anyway, does everyone here with peg1 have those slooow writing speeds?

    Yes, and Peg2 users with G3 will also have quite slow memspeed (though usually not quite as bad as Peg1), this is because the G3 has an old 60x bus instead of the newer MPX bus that is present in the G4...

    Around 80/180 here too, with Pegasos I (April 2) G3. To whom did you sent your e-mail to bPlan? Is there any firmware update for Pegasos I, aside from the original 2003 version?

    i've sent en emailto bplan too and they answered quickly!
    unfortunately there is no newer firmware versions for G3 systems like mine (and for pegasos I), the 06.12.05 update only works with 2B5 boards with G4.
    anyway, blan is a great company! thanks.

    Memtest Results... Using two (2) 256meg Dimms...very unmatched:

    Ram Disk:> memtest -disable
    Allocated memory at 0x2140AF80 -> 0x39AE87BF, 409851968 bytes
    Writing 0x00000000... 473 MB/sec.
    Verifying 0x00000000... 227 MB/sec.
    Writing 0xFFFFFFFF... 473 MB/sec.
    Verifying 0xFFFFFFFF... 227 MB/sec.
    Memory is ok!

    I am pretty sure my OF is from 2005 I only upgraded it once...
    Would I get faster #'s by using one DIMM?? instead of two... I am
    Just wondering what differences there could be with latencies?

    Or would it matter with the way the Northbridge deals with DDR Ram?
    my one stick is Generic ddr400 Dimm while the second stick is a
    Kingston Value select ddr266??

    never tried to use both before tonite thinking they would conflict
    after reading thru this thread I got the Idea (and watching Warzone
    2100 run out of memory during large battle scenes...LOL )

    Does anyone have any knowledge if Single 512meg or 1gig dimm
    would it be faster?

    Thanks

    as you can see results of other ppl here, i guess, you are already getting the best results possible. i have two 512 meg modules 333 mhz, and it does about 400/210 MB/s.

    btw, is your system stable with these two different dimms?

    bye, MarK.

    Those values are within the normal range for a Peg2G4, so I doubt another module will make much difference...

    BTW, you should try the REVERSE option as well, incase the 2 modules don't interact too well (oh, and it's DISABLE (without the - )) it might reveal a problem.

    @ Mark

    Thus Far it seems okay I will have to put more time in and use
    more apps to see what I get. Its been running Dnet + a couple of other
    apps without faults only had one crash... and that was running Warzone
    2100... a total system lock up... but the system was under heavy load

    @ CISC

    I tried your suggestions:

    New Shell process 7
    Ram Disk:> memtest disable
    Allocated memory at 0x215B7740 -> 0x3A3E577F, 417521728 bytes
    Writing and Verifying 0x00000000... Write 478 MB/sec. Verify 230 MB/sec.
    Writing and Verifying 0xFFFFFFFF... Write 479 MB/sec. Verify 230 MB/sec.
    Memory is ok!
    Ram Disk:> memtest reverse
    Allocated memory at 0x217B7B00 -> 0x3A5E5B3F, 417521728 bytes
    Writing 0x00000000... 470 MB/sec.
    Verifying 0x00000000... 227 MB/sec.
    Writing 0xFFFFFFFF... 471 MB/sec.
    Verifying 0xFFFFFFFF... 226 MB/sec.
    Memory is ok!
    Ram Disk:>

    I guess its not going to get faster... maybe time will tell that it is
    more unstable... and it will be worth the change spent on getting a
    new Dimm??
