    Hi folks,

    Now that I have broadband, can anyone reccommend a router, preferably in the UK?

    Ideally, I'd like something that is straightforward to set up and cheap. :-D

    @Robert

    I'd recommend that you buy a Lynksys router. There are plenty of other good brands, but I never had problems with this one and it's quite easy to setup and has a web interface to do so.

    Hope it helps!

    I have a SMC Barricade 7004 router and firewall. It was only 39 EUR (or was it only 35?, don't remember exactly - it was cheap anyway), is slim easy to configure and got good ratings.
    Configuration is bad with Voyager (both, the QNX one and the MOS one) but firefox did the trick.
    It has 4 ports and can handle dsl and cable modems. I didn't found anything I disliked on it yet.

    Hello,

    Even I recommend a Linksys router. I once started with a Router branded by ZoNet but the support was bad, the Firmware was buggy and I had a lot of problems.

    Now I own a Linksys WRT54G Router and that piece of Hardware really rocks. It also supports Wireless LAN and if you do an Firmware upgrade (from their Web page) you will then be able to lock WLAN access to the Router's Setup, be able to use WPA-SPK with TKIP or AES encryption. The ports from outside are all placed to STEALTH mode so whenever someone portscans you everything is hidden. The Firmware used on it is also based on Linux and you can access the Firmware sourcecode as well.

    Currently the best Routers for normal Homeusers are either Linksys or Netgear. I for now haven't regret buying a Linksys router and even if you don't plan to use WLAN get one anyways (you can turn it on or off in the Settings) you might use it one day.
