Which sound cards will work with the peg 2 and the proper drivers? Is it only the SB Live? I am expecting a peg 2 next week and want to have the equipment on hand to put her together.

    Thanks!

Of course, the onboard audio works :p

A very cheap Sb Live 5.1 too.. (works better in linux, with macOnLinux)

You could alway just use the onboard one.

I only know of a driver for the Soundblaster Live
cards. Actually a card with EMU101K should do the trick.
You have to extract the driver from a separate AHI
archive, it is not included with MOS.

I'd try the onboard audio first... If it really sounds as bad as you might think, then consider buying soundcard...

Still, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a list of which audio cards work with MorphOS. Could put together a list with information about the needed drivers and such. I think Linux would be a little different thought.

You can use Sound Blaster Live! and Audigy. I have tryed and used successfully both of them.

Is there a reason to have drivers except for high(er) quality cards?
Maybe if you want lots of inputs/outputs for some reason..

The soundcards that work with MOS are the Creative Soundblaster types - Audigy, Live!, value!, and 5.1 afaik. The card MUST have the EMU 10k chipset.

However, the built in AC97 sound is pretty good. Better than most pc built in sound. If you are just using MOS and normal Linux usage this should be sufficient for your purposes. The Only reason I went with a Live! Value is due to heavy CPU load with MOL... but the sound is better, but honestly the onboard sound is nice.

My idea is to take the load off of the processor in the peg2. I also have about 20gb of mp3 files that I currently listen to on a peecee and want to move them over to the peg2. I have been told that an external soundcard would handle the sound better.

    Thanks.

Oh yes, an addition to the previous message. The vendor that is selling me my peg 2 says that the built in audio is no comparison to what I'd get out of a 3rd party sound card. I have several sound cards laying around in my 'junk pile', but not sure if they use the proper chip. I guess it's time to start looking.

I don't know about "No Comparison"...
Normal people like me don't hear much difference between soundcards (and internal sound chips), so unless you will do much more than just play mp3's, I'd go with the internal one.

For me the Onboard Sound is kind of "metallic".
I'm not good at these comparisons but my Soundblaster Live
has a more natural sound. It does not only depend on the
sound chip used but also on the speakers used and
    the quality of MP3's.

I have a SB Live! Value card not doing anything in my junk pile. I guess I better learn how to get it working! Sounds like I would get some good use from it in my Pegasos!!

I just threw an SB Live card in my Peg II. Obviously, I do not select "Pegasos" under the System Settings in MorphOS. The only other selection is Filesave. Is this what I choose to get audio out of the SB Live? If not, how do I get the new card to be recognized?

Do a search on here for soundblaster live and select show all. There is a thread that tells you how to install the latest version of AHI with the driver you need. I just got done doing it. Its easy. I dont see a big sound improvement though.

The one thing that was pointed out to me about sound and the peg 2 is that when there is a lot of load on the cpu, the sound tends to stutter a lot. The card supposedly stops this. I've heard this is true with MOL especially.

Thanks. I found the thread. The setup was easy. I do notice a difference in sound quality on my end. Actually, I first noticed a major difference in the volume output...had to adjust the software volume down a lot but the quality improvement became apparent when playing mp3's and CD's using "SoundPlayer" (highly recommended).

Yes, I mostly agree with you. The internal AC97 has good enough sound quality for the average user, but try is to set the volume to the maximum! It has a very annoying (and loud) sound even if you don't play anything. (And I've got my CD-ROM's connected to the internal ports, and this sound is 3 or more times louder if they twirl the CD's.)
