Well, there's always the not-recommended way... The Dark One... Quicker, easier, more seductive... Could blow your machine up instaneously...

    1. replace boot.img on your boot partition with the one from ISO (the correct one for your machine!)
    2. reboot old MorphOS with new kernel
    3. mount ISO and run update

Mind you - this might go wrong if older MorphOS version won't for some reason work well with newer kernel. You have been warned!

I used that simplified way for two of my four machines I updated and it worked flawlessly. That is really quick. And of course nasty ;-)
The other two computers were updated by booting the iso off the hdd following this routine: https://via.bckrs.de/MorphOS/morphos_update.html (German)

Only my Peg1 stays 1.4.5 (and stored stbthe attic…).

    Just a question:
When I am using the qick way, do have to copy and
boot the boot.img? Why not just mount the iso,
do the installation and a reboot?

Newer IWizard doesn't work with an older boot.img.

Which is there to prevent the copy process to fail due to locked files, which results in a half done update, which could render the system to fail booting.

Having users, especially inexperienced ones, to fix that is a support pain.

Copy the hybrid img to an usb stick and boot the stick using the macs boot menu.

Copying the boot.img is a two sided sword as you may take the wrong one and render your system useless instantly. Then you need another way to boot it, which is why creating a boot media is important in the first place. And yes. It even happened to me more than once, so be prepared.

Copy the contents of the ISO by hand is also a no go as the file flags are wrong and a single user error or a however caused abortion during the copy process will result in a non working system. Again you need a way to boot, which requires a boot media.

If you really want a secure way, create a boot script with a backup iso boot and an update iso boot. So you can copy the files, select update and done. If your system breaks for some reason you can always go back to a save state. Of course this is the more advanced way and a big hurdle to install and nothing an inexperienced user should try. Especially not without an alternate way of booting.

We spend hours to make the install/update procedure as user friendly and save as possible. Even this late in MorphOS development changes and tweaks are made to improve the experience, even so we have to disable ways that could lead to a faulty system.

got a problem during installation on my mac mini.
The update went smooth (I did not got the problem of C to boot from the CD that I always got all other updates).
When the update was completed I reboot and the booting stuck at the butterfly logo not opening ambient.
After some attempts I decided to repeat the updating process and got the problem that it expired the unregistered time (even if I do have a registered key). However i continued slowly slowly and I arrived to the end.
But again the booting remained forzen at the logo. So now what I have to do? I don't want to do a fresh install. I just did it for 3.18 and I had to reinstall all my programs.

    Any hint?

Boot from CD and restore your backup 3.18 from SYS: partition. MorphOS always creates a backup folder during update, unless there's not enough free space on SYS:.

I would suspect an issue with the file system, especially if you can boot OK from CD. I'd start by running SFS Doctor on all your partitions. Very slow I/O could also be a sing of a dying hard drive if you don't have an SSD. It could also be due to heavy fragmentation, although that normally wouldn't prevent booting.
