I used to own a 1.42 GHz model and I'm pretty sure it was supported. I just want something that is cheap and portable to get online quick while I wait for parts to repair my G5. If I remember right this unit has Radeon 9550 graphics (which I think is an.R300 based GPU).

That's right, this model's got a Radeon 9550. Some earlier models used Radeon 9200.
But be aware that the iBook has got some nasty limits, compared to PowerBooks.

I mean mainly:
- abysmal 32 MB VRAM value;
- part of the RAM is already soldered in place (only one slot available), meaning you cannot go over 1,5 (or even 1,25 in some cases) GB of RAM;
- using an external display is practically impossible;
- opening the damned thing (i.e. to change the hard drive) can give you a headache.

The VRam is limited but it's not a big problem 'cause of the "small" resolution of the screen.

For the rest, I can add the difficulty to connect an iBook with the Wifi (same with a Powerbook, but you can use a supported PCMCIA Wifi card with the Powerbook).

With a 9550, you will not have Goa so you can't launch Warp3D games or demos without installing Wazp3D.

Got a 12" 1,2GHz iBook here, with a Radeon 9200, so I can play Wipeout on the go ^^

Thanks guys. Useful info. It's been awhile since I owned one. I did relay a couple of PowerBook 1.67 laptops to buyers outside the United States when sellers weren't willing to ship outside the US. That is a much nicer unit, with more VRAM.
It's also bigger and heavier. I actually like smaller, lighter laptops.

As for the display - iBooks have got a lowly XGA (1024x768) resolution only while with PowerBook you could get as high as 1440x960 (or even 1920x1080 for 17 inch models).

If you have an iBook and some problematic WiFi you could always get something like a TP-Link nano router, connect your iBook to it through an Ethernet cable and set is to work as a client. This way you could get a working WiFi (but at a cost of one USB port to power the router).

I think I had something like that network adapter on my last iBook. The 9550 Gpu is problematic (being a cut down, slower version of the 8600). The PowerBook use of an R300 Gpu with up to four times the VRaM does make it much more attractive.
