Yo. Anyone else having this weird "problem"?

About ten seconds after my hard drive has accessed data, it goes "working". It is like it's constantly loading files for 15-20 seconds (loading/ticking sound), the HD LED doesn't show any activity. This happens on both of my HDs constantly (Both are Seagate, and I'm using a Peg2) It's kind of annoying. Anyone here with similar experience?

My 80GB Seagate does that. Not too often but annoying still...

I've got a 40G Western Digital in my peg-1 that occationally makes a "ZZzzzT" sound. Strange and annoying. Almost if it were an automatic transmission slipping into neutral or something.

It's a known issue with these drives, part of Seagate's technology
to extend head life. In a "normal" PC, you can't hear it...but
in a quiet system, it can be very annoying.

One thing you can do is to place the drive in one of your larger
bays, and rig up a rubber suspension system. Isolating the drive
from the case will quiet it up considerably (especially in thinner
    aluminium cases).

Eventually, I moved the Barracuda to my PC, and bought a Samsung
for the Pegasos. Suspended with rubber, the Samsung is easily as
noiseless as the Seagate at idle, seeks quieter, and seems a lot
faster. There are *no* audible "head saver" noises with this drive,
    ever.

you could turn up the acoustic noise managment.. but you will increase seek time to do it.

Look on the bright side its not going to have dwell idle problems like IBM have had. They all do this now just seagates do it more thouroghly. Which is exactly why when i got a new hdd i picked up a seagate. Ungodly fast, reliable, and massive rebate! (whcih i never got becuase i lost the reciet on teh way home, swear to god best buy puts pick pockets in the parking lot!) dunno how you can change it in MOS but in linux you can use hdparm to adjust the acoustic manegment level.. umm.. I always turn it off though, who hte hell would want to sacrifice latency for low noise?

You know someone in theory could right a hack for morphos that would monitor hdd activity and issue standby commands to the disk after XX time.. hell it could be a commodity even.

Yeah, I'll definately take performance over noise.

I agree, a standby commodity would be very useful...AOS had them
even. Especially for drives like mine that don't shut down by
themselves after a while...I get nervous leaving it idle for
    hours on end.

    afaik, there's "idestandby" for morphos...

BUT every time harddisk is spinned down shortens its lifetime more than letting it spin for many hours...

    @Jupp3

I've heard that, and I think it depends on the drive and it's
particular construction (some have a built-in shutdown after a
    certain "inactive" time period).
