    Hey Folks,

    Just got a 17" Power Book G4: https://everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbook_g4/specs/powerbook_g4_1.67_17.html

Unfortunately, the Superdrive seems to be dead.

I've tried the boot from a USB stick option with two different USB sticks now and I'm not having any luck.

I tried the 1st open firmware command: boot ud:,\boot.img bi umsd0:morphos.iso

But it just gives a circle with a line through it and won't boot.

So I tried the 2nd method where you locate your USB stick and boot with the appropriate command. All it does is this:

    Loading ELF

    DO-QUIESCE finished_

Any ideas? Am I missing a step or not doing a step?

Not sure bout the exact commands, but the USB boot requires both the OF and MorphOS to cooperate with the USB stick.
You can remove the OF from the equation by putting the boot.img onto an OSX partition and then locate it their in OF.

And offcourse make sure you allways use the boot.img found in the macppc32 (?) folder, the one in the root dir of the ISO will only work for the Pegasos2.

Yes, I do have the correct boot.img from the macppc32 folder.

Interesting idea about putting it on an OSX partition. I'm suspecting that it doesn't like my USB sticks. One is an 8gb Lexar and the other is an 8gb Kingston.

Any way to just boot from an bootable external CD/DVD USB drive?

Not sure if you can boot from an external CD/DVD USB drive, but if you haven't already tried cleaning your existing drive first, I would open up your 17" PowerBook and carefully clean all the dust out, specially from the cooling fans and heat sinks, and check the fans to see if their bearings are still good. Like I mentioned to another member here just a few minutes ago, I strongly suggest thoroughly cleaning the inside of any electronic equipment that is bought, or otherwise obtained 2nd hand (used). PowerBooks are particularly subject to over-heating problems, if not cleaned regularly.

Congrats on obtaining that 17", 1.67GHz G4 PowerBook, I have the last model made by Apple, with the high resolution LCD display, and think it is about the best hardware for running MorphOS.

AFAIK, replacement batteries and other parts are still available, but might not be for very much longer at reasonable prices, so I purchased a replacement "fan + heat sink" assembly and new battery for my PowerBook over a year ago, as well as some other part of the charging system, which I can't remember exactly what it is right now, just in case I need it in the future. I'm going to get a replacement SuperDrive as well, for both my PowerBook, and for my 1.5GHz G4 MacMini, as they seem to fail before anything else on these systems.

Good luck getting MorphOS3.10 installed, and also finding a replacement SuperDrive, and any other spare parts you decide to obtain.

At this point boot.img has been successfully loaded and the problem is the next step where morphos.iso should be loaded/booted. So, the USB stick seems to work, because at least something can be read from it.

Double check that you have matching name for the morphos.iso on the command line you write and on the USB stick. "morphos.iso" vs "morphos-3.10.iso" etc.

Then try to boot into bootmenu, if you can see it. Add "bm" option to the end of your boot line.

I'm quite sure that's the case. The guide says "morphos.iso", but the ISO file has different name. Hence, MorphOS started booting, but the required medium just "isn't there".

    To boot from USB:
Make 2 partitions - a small HFS-partition (100MB) and copy boot.img for 32-Bit-MAC on it. Second partition for the rest of the stick with SFS-Filesystem and declare it bootable with prio 10. Name it SYS-USB (with HD-Config - the name of partition when formatting can be anything else - suggestion: System). Dont forget to format partitions. First partition you may name boot.
Then copy content of MOS3.10-iso to SFS partition. Folders for MAC-32Bit / 64Bit and other boot.images not needed.

    Boot command in OpenFirmware (OF):

    boot ud:,\boot.img bootdevice=SYS-USB

Note: There are some PB which don't create device ud in OpenFirmware. You can see that by typing devalias in OF - ud should be listed.
If not, you need to type the complete hardware-path, which is following for the LEFT USB-port:

    boot /pci@f2000000/usb@1b/disk@1:,\boot.img bootdevice=SYS-USB

Koszer is correct! I was typing morphos.iso instead of morphos-3.10.iso

I'm at work now but I'll give it another go when I get home.

Yes! It's now installed. Thanks folks.
