I want to buy a terrabyte HDD for my Powermac G5. Is there anything I have to keep in mind when buying one or will any SATA do?

any SATA hard drive should be ok, but keep in mind that a SATA3 drive won't get any close to SATA 3 speeds, SATA 3 drives have to be configured in SATA 2 mode (usually it has a jumper on it to set it up ) for the G5. So make sure there's such a jumper on the drive.

SSDs are a bit more tricky, some SATA 3 SDDs won't work, some will. Only all SATA2 SSDs should be ok (hard to find now).

    SATA 3 = 6Gbit/s
    SATA 2 = 3Gbit/s

the best way for you not to get an unsupported one would be to google for the model(s) you can get and powermac g5 compatibility. All information i just gave you comes from googling.

I have plenty of bad experiences of trying to do these kind of things without informed help. So I prefer to listen to other peoples recommendations.

I was able to connect an external USB HDD and read it without problem. Does that mean that I can use that HDD in my G5 or only via USB?

    This should work fine.

Remember to install IceFS if you want one contiguous 1TB partition.

    Thanks :-)

I don't mind having plenty of partitions as long as everything works.

IIRC PFS3 has a max partition size of 128GB, not sure about SFS.

I cant get a lot of them but I can purchase Intel SSD at an employee discount. Most are 50% off what normal people have to pay. Let me know the model you want and I can look it up at work and see what I can do for you if you want one.

I have read recommandations of Intel 320 series should be the best choice of SSD for a Pmac G5.

@Yasu go to Kjell & company and ask for a SATA I compatible 1TB hardrive.

Thanks for all the advise! Right now I'm thinking of using one of my older 1 TB USB HDD that MOS reads without problem and use them instead. The reason is so I can use the same HDD on my various MOS systems.

If MOS can read NTFS via USB, does that also mean that it should be able to format it in a MOS friendly file system? Or does reading it tell me nothing about that posibility?

How much faster is SSD on MOS really? That Windows is faster is given since it's just pure sh!t :-D
