I just got a 1.42Ghz dual CPU card for my Dual 1GHZ MDD. Problem is when I put in the new CPU all I get is a startup chime and then it shuts off about 30 seconds later.

This is a 167Mhz bus system so I know thats not the issue. Im going to guess I got burned yet again on an ebay auction that stated it was a tested CPU. It states returns are accepted but I wanted to make sure Im now missing something before I send it back.

    Reset your pram first.
    Changing cpus confuses your board.

BTW - Did you upgrade the heatsink?
A 1GHz heatsink is inadequate for a 1.42 GHz cpu card.

Nope but I have an after market fan in mine and it runs cool. How do I reset the pram if I am only on MOS? I have no OS X in this machine.

    As this article says :

    1: Shut down your Mac.
2: Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3: Turn on the computer.
4: Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
5: Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6: Release the keys.

The old saying is that you keep holing the keys until like the 5th time it chimes. Not sure if there is any truth to it but some claim that 1 chime isn't enough. Plus if you are at this point an extra 30 seconds won't hurt anything.

Onboard switch on the motherboard, its rather tiny.
I heard of anyone using a non-apple cooler on a processor.
How do you know its cool?

Im going to just call it dead. I cant get the thing to do a PRAM reset with the key combos. Maybe it doesnt like my newer Apple keyboard or something, but even pulling the battery and pressing the power button like some recommend does nothing to make it boot.

I put the 1GHZ back in and all is fine. As for the cooler, I have a temp monitor I use and it runs at a high of 110 F most of the time while idle and 140 at CPU load.

Yea, the dual 1.42ghz CPU module got really hot even with the copper heatsink I had. Unless you are using OSX on it, you can overclock yourself a single 1.25ghz cpu card to 1.5ghz and call it the day. :)

I have one of those somewhere.
AmigaDave did the same mod before we both focused on G5s.
    It works.

BTW - of course your old CPU works, that doesn't mean the 1.42 doesn't unless you reset the system.
and i would not try to use a keyboard function.
the momentary contact switch is on your motherboard.

Did you try that as well?
Several times, since I never seen that work with one push.
