Must be the early water cooled versions.
I am sitting here with a 2.3 dual core model and its quiet.

I do have a Sun system that does that (ramp up all fans at start up).
It sounds like a jet getting ready for take off.
Luckily it reduces the fan's speeds and they never get that loud again.
But it does make me reconsider rebooting late at night.

I'd really like to see a single core CPU benchmark comparison between an early 2.7 GHz Dual CPU G5 and a later 2.5 GHz Quad core G5.

I am fairly certain the 2.5 is the more powerful system.

Now if something could be done with the other three cores...

    It's a 2.0GHz non-liquid-cooled version ;)

    Power Mac G5 (Late 2005)
    Dual Dual-Core PowerPC G5 @ 2.5 GHz 3296

    Power Mac G5 (June 2004)
    Dual PowerPC G5 @ 2.7 GHz 2282

But thats using all available CPUs obviously

Doesn't the 2.7 version use ddr1 memory and a slower bus speed? Dunno, I suspect in real life they'd be about the same.

    @Jim:
No it's a single cpu. I guess problem is only in the fan which is a little noisy.
When I used Ubuntu on the G5 sometimes fans are noisy. Browsing with FireFox could make this possible but that not lasts long.

    WOW!
That has to be the reliance on a synthetic test, no way is there that much difference.

But the 2.3 does seem more powerful than its predecessor.

So, once adopted, the 2.5 Quad is likely to be our most powerful system (even on one CPU).

IIRC the G5 2.5 has a different LCS (manufacturer)...are they known for liquid leakage
    or their LCS works better?

I believe the G5 2.5's Delph single pump cooling system is more reliable.

"The Power Macintosh G5 "Quad Core" (2.5) (Late 2005) uses a liquid cooling system that is substantially improved and much better "sealed" to both reduce the likelihood of leaks and prevent leaks from damaging other system components."

The only fan I can hear is the one mounted on the 9800XT graphic card which is louder than whole G5 fans!

Same problem which I had before I bought the Arctic Silencer - this fan cools much better than the original one with less noise disturbance.

There was no 2.7 GHz version released by Apple in June 2004, only up to 2.5 GHz. 2.7 GHz version came in 2005. So this might be an overclocked machine, or CPU module exchanged.

    > Doesn't the 2.7 version use ddr1 memory and a slower bus speed?

DDR1 in early 2005 models vs. DDR2 in late 2005 models, yes. But FSB speed is always half the CPU clock rate for the PowerMac G5 (except for one late 2004 model where it's a third), so 2.7 GHz early 2005 model has faster FSB than 2.5 GHz late 2005 model.

Just wanted to thank you guys for sharing your experience, thoughts, knowledge and all, still waiting for the seller to share some details with me on the 2.7Ghz unit.. hopefully I can start playing with it soon.

I'd second that. I love my PowerBook for the convenience it has but my 2.7GHz G5 is absolutely amazing by comparison.

The expense that Christmas brings ate away at my savings otherwise I would have registered my G5 a couple of weeks ago.

Hopefully in the next couple of months I'll do so, unless some altruistic person feels like helping me out with the MOS licence fee. ;)
