Yes, considering the pricing of the processors Trevor has mentioned, he won't be able to significantly lower his price.
But he will be able to offer a faster processor with up to four cores.
No AltiVec instructions and probably less PCIe lanes (but at a later, faster spec).
All things considered, while still expensive (even the Acube hardware), I'm glad we are being given some new options.
If Trevor builds a Qorlq system and our developers port to it I WILL buy one.
Regardless of any other consideration, price be damned, to show my support (and to have something NEW).
And, BTW, I would LOVE to be able to buy new higher end video cards.
Right now I have a stack of eight (
yes eight) Radeon 9800Pro and Radeon 9800XT cards sitting behind me.
I used ATITool ver 0.26 to test each of them today.
While most boot correctly, ALL of them artifact under testing.
A word to the wise, I am finding that the failure rate of R300 cards is
much higher than their R200 predecessors.
They just run so much hotter.
But that doesn't explain why the R400 cards I have on hand are not failing at a similar rate as the two designs are somewhat related (the R400 basically doubling the number of pipelines and , once again, raising the clock speeds).
Don't get me wrong, R400s do fail (so do R200), but I'm disgusted with the problems I've had with the R300 9especially the R360).
Its the main reason I've stopped offering to flash these cards. For every card I have sent out, i have two or three sitting here that have some level of dysfunction.
For example, the machine I'm typing on right now has a Radeon 9800Pro 256MB video card in it with ram heatsinks and a big Zalman cooler.
It works perfectly in 2D application.
If all you ever did was surf the web or do some word processing you would never know it had issues (since it has no problem with sites like YouTube).
BUT...run a 3D app on it and it produces all sorts of distortion.
And the only new R300 cards on the market are some scary looking devices from China.
So, to wrap up a far too long post, I'd love to be able to run an Acube board with an R500 like the X1300.
Or a new A-eon board with something even more modern.
I'm getting tired of trying to keep old hardware functioning.
One of my MDDs just died (but that is another story)
Take care all.
