G5 2.0 to 2.3 CPU swap worked. :)

Just too curious to see if the CPU swapping would clock up from 2.0ghz to 2.3ghz, and it was a success! :)

I did try out a 2.7ghz CPU set but of course it didn't post. Might be because the board itself just doesn't ID the newer CPUs right. Sure 300mhz more isnt too big of a jump, but at least it powered up.

    Original 2.0ghz G5 CPUs
    Swapped 2.3ghz Xserve CPUs

    8-)

Just did a few more tests. It wasn't starved for power, as I swapped the 2.7's PSU to the 2.0s tower but still nothing.

Interesting note though, the Boot Rom of the 2.7 is MUCH newer than the 2.0's rom.

    2.0 : 5.1.8f7
    2.7 : 5.2.4f1

Tried to see if there was some kind of a rom updater, but nothing was ever released. Figured it would be worth a shot updating the ROM and seeing if it will boot up the 2.7s.

Not sure if you have OS X installed, but would be worth a shot to see what Boot ROM is installed on yours.

Sucks cause Apple never released the 5.2.4f1 rom that these 2.7s have. Seems as they only released one version of it for that tower. Wish I knew some coding and hacking to backup this current boot rom and then flash it over to the 2.0 tower. Though it would probably kill it. 8-)

There is a bootrom copier for mac.
You will need to put another hard drive in and install Mac OS long enough to get the rom.
Don't want to blow away your mos install.

I bought a 1.8ghz accelerator for my quicksilver. It came with a rom ripper.
I have since sold it becuase I got a powerbook g4.
Maybe it only came with that package.
    :-(
I cannot find one on the net. I searched all of the hackintosh sites thinking they would have it.

Ahhh. Ok this is for a Powermac G5. Older Power macs have rom tools.

But thanks though. :) To make a long story short, Apple didn't release any new boot roms publicly if it was only to update it for new CPU code. Course later Macs had the newer boot rom to accomodate the newer CPUs. I believe it may be at least possible to get a 2.5ghz cpu set onto this 2.0ghz board. If I find a cheap enough set off ebay I might give it a try.

Unless someone here is super smart and knows how to dump the boot rom to a file and somehow make a utility to program it to a board, then that would be something worth trying. 8-)

I am wondering if the OF can dump to a thumb drive.
In those links I sent you it seemed that the rom was not the issue with swapping cpus.

Many with 2.7ghz machines had older roms that 2.0ghz machines were running on.

Hmmm. Both 2.7ghz boards I have are both on 5.2.4f1 boot roms... Newest one available and currently on my 2.0 tower I was testing on is 5.1.8f7. That one didn't boot the 2.7s.

Just found a good deal on a 2.5ghz CPU set for $29 shipped. I will test them once they come in on the 2.0ghz board to see if they will boot or reject them. Stay tuned... 8-)
