I am in a really unconfortable position of how to explain this without looking like a little bt of looney, lol..

Well, it first appeared with Gigalomania a couple of days ago, as I reported in its thread here at MorphZone, whereas the game (menu + ingame) is comletely in red! Today I tried odamex (with Doom 2 plus Deus Vult II) and to my amazement the game itslef was once again in red! Then I headed back to games that I have already verified as playable to my system (installed 6 or more months ago) and I get the same prob (Bermuda Syndrome and Duke Nukem are in red as well!).

    WTF is going on?

I reverted back to previous verion of PowerSDL but nothing changed...

This is on PowerMac G4 1.6Ghz, 2GB Ram. Radeon 9000 64MB (Ambient screen 1280x1024@24bit) / MorphOS 3.1 + PackUltimate 3.1 + everything updated as reported by latest version of Grunch. I don't have any other problem in my machine, I just can't play all these games, getting the same weird error! Any help?

EDIT: GraphX. has the same problem now :(

Is your radeon proper Mac version? Does it overheat by any chance?

    Why would that matter?
I've flashed 9000s and 9100s and never had a problem with them.
Currently I'm using a flashed 9800XT, also with 0 problems.
The only thing a "proper Mac version" adds is cost.

I've flashed couple of 9200 cards and didn't get 3D working propely on any of them - that's why I prefer to spend few more bucks and have peace of mind while using it.

    Good answer Pampers,
But I've never run into this problem.
And my R300 cards work flawlessly.
Most of the 9800 Mac cards I find for sale are G5 specific, which won't be a problem in the future, but now...

    Hello all!

The card is Mac edition (or at least that's how it was labeled when sold to me).

Still, until recently I had no trouble whatsoever.

Furthermore, I wouldn't characterize my graphic problem as corruption or the card being slow, it's just that the output window of the game (or the GrafX app) looks like being "overlayed" with red color (!), while the rest of the screen (Ambient) looks perfect.

I will conduct further experiments today when I will return from work (launching a "proper" 3D game like Quake 2 or executing Blender) but I have the strange feeling that it has something to do with PowerSDL.

Let me explain, Grunch reports that I have installed v. 16, however, I had downgraded (by executing the installer contained in the archive) to V. 14. OTOH, project/about reports v. 1.2.15 (!?).. So how can I truly verify which version am I using? Is it possible to manually downgrade PowerSDL (by copying individually libs) ?

Sure as there is no 3D driver for R300 yet and only problems with flashed cards happens while using 3D actually.

For instance by comparing the file sizes of your PowerSDL libs to the libs inside downloaded PowerSDL archives one by one.

    > Is it possible to manually downgrade PowerSDL (by copying individually libs) ?

Of course it is (and also to upgrade), as some libs is what PowerSDL comprises after all. Grunch may not like that, though.

Tested yesterday Quake 2 and Quake 3 and both games run just fine (no artifacts, glitches or slowdowns whatsoever).

I checked the libs of PowerSDL and they had a time attribute of 21/03. I replaced them manually from the official PowerSDL.lha archive (new time attribute 26/03) though the file sizes were equal. Nothing changed. I did the same with the old PowerSDLv.14 (completely different size files), rebooted and the problem still persists.

Btw, a side question, isn't there a more robust solution to check for libraries versions via cli or information / how Grunch retrieves this kind of info?

I really don't know what to do and where to check afterwards :( I just don't want to resort on a clean installation (that would be an .. OS4 solution, that I am trying to avoid) but I need to have my MorphOS machine fixed asap since I am about to write some reviews and I have pressing deadlines.

    Any help?

These don't sound like the original date stamps from the PowerSDL.lha archive(s) but like ones that were applied during the install process to your system. After all, there was no PowerSDL release 6 days ago nor yesterday.

    > though the file sizes were equal.

I'd guess the files are the same then.

    > isn't there a more robust solution to check for libraries versions via cli [...]?

There is, using the 'version' command, preferably together with the 'full' option:

    http://amiga.sourceforge.net/amigadevhelp/phpwebdev.php?keyword=Version&funcgroup=AmigaDOS

This assumes that the author of the file has properly followed the Amiga versioning conventions and also has really incremented the revision number for each (minor) release. I think itix does both, so it should work with the PowerSDL libs this way.

I haven't run in this problem with the R200 cards I've flashed either.
And the R300 cards I've flashed so far have full 128K roms so I really don't anticipate any problem.
After all, they work fine under OSX (running OpenGL 3D apps).

For that matter, under OSX I've successfully converted R400 video cards to G4 and G5 use (again, without any glitches using 3D acceleration).

Are you sure the problem isn't MorphOS related?

BTW - The first video card I flashed was a Radeon 9200 and it worked perfectly after I removed one resistor (easier then moving it).
The only time I've had problems with this GPU is when the OEM doesn't follow the reference design.

And after a format + new installation aforementioned games are back to their normal colors.

    All the games are red
    And the screen is blue
    I went for a walk
    On down to the loo
    I'd be safe and warm
If I had closed the door
    Computer games an' dreamin'
Why is it such a chore?

    I looked into the fridge
    I passed along the way
You know, I got down on my knees
    And I began to say
Oh, where is last night's pizza?
I want to binge and play
    Oh, computer games an' dreamin'
    And what will MorphZone say?

    All the games are red
    And the screen is blue
    I went for a walk
    On down to the loo
If I could just fix it
    I could play today...
