Installing Quake III in Mac Mini G4 1.5GHz, 80GB HDD

    I keep getting the following message while trying to install Quake III: "You need about 500MB free storage to install to "System:Games/Quake III"

    Am I missing something or should I try some other route to install?

    Thanks in advance for any advice.

    How much GB of space you have set to your System partition when you installed the OS?

    However, I don't think that you are forced to install the game at System: but more likely wherever you want.

    Note though that in case you install anything exceeding max capacity of System partition, will end on a corrupted partition that won't even boot the OS in the first place (been there, done that) and you will need a complete format and reinstall.

    How is that even possible? Or do you mean System partition was larger than filesystem actually supports?
    1 + 1 = 3 with very large values of 1

    This is slightly ot, however, under MOS3.0 I had created a small System partition (can't remember exact size). Afterwards, I started installing Pack Ultimate 2.7 (old version) with default settings and half way through I went out of storage. This resulted on a non functional / non bootable machine. had to format and install once again.

    In that case the Ultimate Pack installation did not check the required storage size and when you ran out of space you have tons of half installed applications on disk.

    This isn´t a filesystem problem. Not even a MorphOS Problem. Installing broken software or installing only half a package result in a useless system everywhere.

    Ultimate Pack is not installing application by application, so at the end one application will be broken on error. It simply copies over all files. So files were added into user-startup whch are not even installed at the state when the installation failed. When install fails the system will try to load the applications during next boot phase and simply fail. Same for WBStartup.

    Better use Grunch and just install the tools you want or download and extract the Ultimate Pack by hand and just drag over the tools you really want to use.

    Speaking about partition sizes, I don´t like partitions at all.

    You think about their sizes and after half a year, one partition is full and the other is nearly empty. You start mixing files and at the end it is a gigantic mess.

    Better create a single partition for MorphOS, which can be up to 120 GB. This is far enough for everything. If you want separate DATA: or "WORK:", then simply create a drawer in sys: and drag them onto the Desktop. Now all drives "share" all free space without even wasting a few GBs for partition aligning and headers.

    I'm afraid that this opinion of yours might not be shared by all others ;-)

    For wasting 1 GiB of HDD space, 8 padding "Apple_Void" partitions are needed, i.e. as much as 9 real partitions. I'd guess most people to have a significantly smaller number of partitions per HDD.

    The default partitioning scheme doesn't allocate a whole ton of space to "System". For anything particularly huge, put it in "Work" instead.
    Amiga 1200 and G4 MDD MOS as my main computers.

    No, this may work when using some old partition tool, but using 10.5 install disk easily eats up to 1 GB between each partition. When using MorphOS only, only a few blocks are lost, but if you plan using leopard you get into trouble.

    Having only 80GB, then loosing 3 or more GB is important.

    My Systempartition is 16 GB in size and only 8 GB used. I just outsourced music, videos and emulators.

    Here, HDConfig reports a size of exactly 128 MB for each padding partition. The partitioning was done with MacOSX 10.5.8 (not the install disc but an already installed OS, as luckily it is able to resize the partition it sits on).
