    @Jim:

Pretty good? I'd say is rather sluggish and totally alien - like running this via VNC on some linux box. No thanks.

Cairo helps you with displaying text in various fonts and styles, but thats where it ends (it's just a GFX-library after all).

Sure some sort of Rich-Text-Editor should be relativly easy but thats not something we are missing.

    The real crux would be:
    -Formating
-Indexes and other extended editing features
-Compability with existing documents (read MS-Word)
    -Embeeding pictures, formulas etc.
    -Lots more

Something based on TeX might be an option.

AND file import and conversion, something both Google Docs and Open Office do poorly.
And while I appreciate the argument that cloud apps are adequate, I'd prefer a local app for word processing, file storage, and printing.

Has anyone figured out what the hook is in this, because nothing is free. Goggle must have some angle.

In fact, for the most part, the argument that word processing via the cloud is a valid application for this technology seems pretty threadbare.

I could do relatively adequate word processing on machines running between .89 and 4.77 Mhz. Why would I want to involve all this technology to accomplish something that is relatively simple and requires very little processing power?

What about hepling Pagestream author instead of doing port of OO or AbiWord? I'm just asking because I don't use wordprocessors nearly at all and even if I do, google docs is good enough for me.

I have to agree with JacaDcaps. Abiword via amicygnix is not a pleasant experience. I tried it out on my overclocked Pegasos 2 (1266Mhz) and it was like a slug in treacle.

Good idea about the vacation, where do i sign? :)

You (and any other MorphOS Development Team members, or MorphOS users) have a standing invitation to vacation at my place any time you like. I have a large extra room (mostly full of Amiga computers) with two bunk beds that you can stay in, while you explore the surrounding areas of Southern California. You can even bring up to 3 of your family members or friends with you, just let me know a few weeks in advance, to make sure I will be home during that time.

Why not just use Final Writer? It works with MorphOS right? If you need DTP features then of course buy PageStream Pro 5.x.

again.... f w/ps and all the rest do not offer conversion of .doc files or save in that format. Not talking about simple rtf here, if someone has a doc from let's say work you open it and go on any other system..except ours! that's what we are talking about.

"...and it was like a slug in treacle.

That is not a glowing recommendation.
And FinalWriter isn't the most modern solution.
So where do we go from here?

didn't look like a slug on that 800mhz sam... maybe we should solicite Aos4 users on its feasibility

If you refer to the Youtube video: AmigaOne XE with G4, not Sam440.

    >If you refer to the Youtube video: AmigaOne XE with G4, not Sam440.

    That would be slightly faster.
Now I'm totally confused. Fast enough<>Slow as a slug? Can't be both.
Pity we don't just have a port to decide for ourselves.

And that was on a 60% faster CPU even.

Actually, now that you mention it, Fab said the X11 server we could use would be faster than the one used in the AOS port.

I still think it would be nice, if iys relatively easy to do, to have to software ported to judge it on our own.

Yes, Fab did say that AmiCygnix was slower than Xami. And Ruud said that he used AmiCygnix on his 1266 MHz G4. But now the Youtube video that some say shows acceptable speed *also* shows AmiCygnix, namely on an 800 MHz G4 (i.e. 37% slower CPU). No Xami involved at all. Go figure.

Actually, Fab said that on OS4 Xami could as well be used instead of AmiCygnix. But you're right in that both Ruud and the Youtube video uploader used AmiCygnix.

Looks like AbiWord might be the best path to go for a free word processor since Pagestream is paid for isnt it?

Final writer and wordworth were paid for and presumably not available anymore.
Maybe someone could have a look at ProText that was by Arnor it is free now maybe it can be patched to work on morphos if it doesnt work currently.

Studying the X11 issue I can understand the attitudes of some that dislike using this solution. Its rather similar to porting software that relies on the GTK-API.
Adding another layer of alien software just to run a non-native program is a brute force trick that wastes system resources and slows response time.

So, is their an MUI based word processor that's at least somewhat capable?
Or are we back to Goggle docs and Microsoft Word online?

We only have our not bad but very outdated word processors like FW, Wordworth and Amiga Writer or the online options that have their issues but provide a good compability to the usual formats.

Well,I do quite some stuff with OWB/google docs, a little bit with the old Amiga programs and most with MSO either using OS X or WinXP. Of course I would love to do everything on my MorphOS machine, but well I cannot anyway (or do you have Illustrator at hand or Matlab). I think in the office domain it doesn't look that dark.
